Safe & Sound Protocol™

When your body is stuck listening for danger, calm can feel out of reach. Specially filtered music helps your nervous system begin to settle.

When your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, it's not a flaw. It's your body doing exactly what it learned to do. But when that state becomes the default, even ordinary life can feel exhausting, overwhelming, or out of reach. The Safe and Sound Protocol™ works with your nervous system directly, helping it learn that safety is available, so it can begin to settle.

What Is the Safe and Sound Protocol™?

The Safe and Sound Protocol™ (SSP) is a listening therapy developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, grounded in his research into how the nervous system responds to the world around us. It uses specially filtered music to help your body shift out of a stressed, guarded state into one where you feel safer, calmer, and more able to be present with yourself and others.

Here's the idea: when your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, even ordinary sounds can feel threatening or overwhelming. The SSP filters music to highlight the specific sound frequencies of the human voice, the sounds our bodies naturally associate with safety. Over time, your brain learns to recognize cues of safety instead of danger.

Who Can Benefit?

The SSP is designed for anyone whose body is stuck in a pattern of stress or shutdown, even when you want to feel calm, connected, or engaged. You may benefit if you experience:

  • Ongoing stress, anxiety, or a feeling of always being on edge
  • Big emotional reactions that feel hard to manage
  • Pulling away from people or avoiding social situations
  • Feeling overwhelmed by sounds, lights, or busy environments
  • Lingering effects of past difficult or traumatic experiences
  • Feeling like therapy isn't moving forward because you can't fully settle into it
  • Sensitivity to certain sounds or difficulty processing what people are saying

The SSP is commonly used with people navigating trauma, autism and other forms of neurodivergence, sensory processing challenges, depression, and anxiety.

How It Works

The SSP uses filtered music delivered through headphones to gently train your ears and brain to better recognize safe sounds, especially the sound of the human voice. When your nervous system gets better at detecting safety, it naturally begins to relax. That relaxation opens the door to feeling more connected, more regulated, and more ready to engage with life.

The program is guided by a trained therapist and delivered through the Unyte Health app with over-ear headphones. Your therapist carefully adjusts the pace and length of each session based on how your body is responding. This isn't a generic playlist. It's a clinical tool, personalized to what your nervous system can handle.

Because the SSP helps your body settle into a calmer, more open state, it can make other types of therapy more effective too, including talk therapy, EMDR, somatic work, IFS, and more.

What the Research Shows

People who complete the SSP consistently report real, noticeable changes.

85%

reported a meaningful decrease in anxiety

81%

experienced noticeable improvements in mood and emotional well-being

87%

experienced significant relief from trauma-related symptoms

84%

of caregivers noticed positive changes in their loved ones

Beyond the numbers, providers describe shifts that are hard to put into words. The SSP often creates the foundation that lets other healing work actually take hold.

Delivered Remotely

We offer the SSP through remote, therapist-guided sessions, so you can do the program from the comfort of your home. Since the listening happens through an app and headphones, remote delivery isn't a workaround, it's how the SSP is designed to work.

Your therapist will begin with a conversation to understand your needs and goals, help you get set up with the app, and support you throughout the entire process. The SSP is meant to complement, not replace, whatever other therapeutic work you're already doing.

Why Choose Live Your Life Counseling?

We believe the quality of care you receive is directly connected to the well-being of the person providing it. That's not just a value we hold, it's a belief that shapes how we run our practice. We work hard to support our clinicians so they can show up fully present for you, because a clinician in survival mode cannot help you out of yours.

Our approach is deeply human, trauma-informed, and grounded in a simple belief: healing isn't about fixing what's broken or becoming someone new. It's about freeing yourself from the unwanted ways the past may still be shaping your present. Our goal is to empower you to live your life with more freedom, choice, and presence than before.

We'll work to match you with a clinician who feels like a genuine fit, even if that means referring you to another practice, because we know that relationship is the foundation everything else is built on.
